Week 27!

We are looking forward to a wonderful week as we round out the 3rd quarter! Parents, thank you for your continued support at home with homework and reading. It has been so amazing to see how much our 1st graders have learned and grown over just a few short months!

Here's what we can expect this week:

Science:
This week we are beginning a new unit of study in science! We will be diving into the study of different scientists and their biographies. This week we will study Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur. We will listen to their contributions to science and our world.

History:
This week we will learn about the Lost Colony, Jamestown and the Pilgrims journey to the New World.

Literature:
We will read the stories of Anansi.  Next week we will begin Sam the Minuteman, so please ensure that your child has a copy of the story and brings it to school next week. Thank you!

Math:
This week will be an exciting week in math as students begin learning concepts of multiplication. We will start by creating and identifying equal groups of numbers. For example, 3 groups of 2 dogs makes 6 total dogs. We will have a cumulative test on Friday on units 1-13 that will focus on all concepts learned throughout the year, not including multiplication.

ELA:

Poem:
The Swing by Robert Louis Stevenson (We will recite on Wednesday, 2/28)

Idiom:
An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Writing:
Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read and write about sections of "The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams Bianco and "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell.

Grammar:
We will review all that we have learned this quarter by reading about and working with verbs, nouns, and adjectives.  We will finish our unit on adjectives and will take an assessment on Tuesday.

Spalding:
Monday: next, indeed, four, herself, power, wish, because, cause, world, country

Tuesday: meet, meat, another, tripped, trip, list, people, ever, held, church

Wednesday: once, one, own, before, know, no, were, where, there, here
