Week 21!

Good Afternoon!

What an amazing week back it has been! The scholars of 1A have returned from break ready to learn and I am so very proud of them and am so happy to be back into the swing of things.

We look forward to the week ahead and expanding our sense of wonder when we visit the science center for our field trip at the end of the week!

Announcements

*Important Field Trip Information: Our field trip is THIS Friday, 1/19.  Please ensure that:

-Your child brings their sweater, a disposable water bottle labeled with their name, and a completely disposable sack lunch labeled with their name.

-Your child wears their uniform and appropriate shoes for walking.

-Your child arrives to school on time.  We will be leaving by 8:15am and arriving back to school approximately by 2pm.


*Spalding Homework Update: You may notice that the Spalding spelling homework looks a bit different this week.  We have included a checklist at the top to ensure accuracy and neatness.  We also ask the students include a sentence containing 2 spelling words and correct conventions. 

Academics

Literature:  We will review the elements of fairy tales as we read Rapunzel.  We will use this fairy tale to help us practice cause and effect. 

Poem:  I Know all the Sounds that the Animals Make Idiom: Fish out of water.

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read a section of the folk tale “Master of All Masters” and one of Aesop’s fables, “The Dog and His Reflection”

Grammar:  We will review action verbs before learning about the state of being verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been. 

Math: This week in math we will practice collecting data and creating graphs. We will also learn how to interpret data represented on a picture graph. We will continue to practice our addition and subtraction skills during math centers on Wednesday

History: This week we will begin to explore the culture of the Aztecs. On Wednesday, we will learn about the daily life of this ancient culture and how they decided on where to settle.

Science:  This week we are moving onto the muscular system! We will be able to describe the two main functions of the muscular system and well as different types of muscles. We will put together a magnetic human body to get an in depth look at the different muscles we have. The scholars will also work on sorting muscles into different groups.
